If you read the headlines, Donald Trump’s election has killed the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). The headlines have it wrong.

Democratic senator from Massachusetts offers fresh criticism of trade deal in new video

Many think our government is for sale. However, by taking a look at the facts below provided by the Open Secrets, it is easy to understand where they are coming from.

Fast Track Down

The Fast Track trade authority package was rejected Friday because two years of effort by a vast corporate coalition, the White House and GOP leaders -- and weeks of deals swapped for yes votes -- could not assuage a majority in the House of Representatives facing constituents' concerns that more of the same trade policy would kill more jobs, push down wages and open a Pandora's box of other damaging consequences.

It just doesn't get more cynical than this. Note that we're talking about a bipartisan trade deal, thanks to 14 Democratic senators led by Ron Wyden and Chuck Schumer. If Democrats fail to regain the Senate or put their next neo-liberal candidate in the White House — or both — they will have done it to themselves through cynical moves like this.

For its proponents, the TPP is one deal to rule them all -- one deal to take economies representing 40 percent of the world's economic output and, in the darkness, bind them. The fight over fast-track authority, necessary for the TPP's passage, has already become an enthralling political saga. But here comes a plot twist: We've all been focusing on the wrong battlefield.

Senate votes against fast-tracking TPP

Lawmakers in the United States Senate have thrown a wrench in a plan that would have given President Barack Obama “fast track” authority to advance a 12-nation trade deal between the US and Pacific Ring partners. How did your Senator vote? See the Roll Call here.

"The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government."    —Article IV, Section 4, US Constitution

The “Progressive Coalition For American Jobs,” run by former Obama campaign staffers, purports to represent the progressive left on the trade deal that the progressive left hates.

In a show of solidarity, as many as 800 union and community activists from across economic sectors came to Capitol Hill on Wednesday to tell their members of Congress to reject Fast Track for bad trade deals.
