America cannot lock its poor in debtor's prisons to fund its police departments

Locking people in jail for being poor is unconstitutional and indefensible.

Ray Charles Staten Sr. should have celebrated his 60th birthday this month. Instead, his family marked the fourth anniversary of his death. It all started, according to a lawsuit that settled in March 2015, when a small debt became a death sentence in the spring of 2011.

The Next Attack on Voting Rights

Residents cast their votes at a polling place on Nov. 4, 2014 in Ferguson, Missouri. The Brennan Center found only four cases of in-person voter fraud in the state.

The last round of voter restrictions came after the 2010 Republican wave, when new GOP majorities passed voter identification laws and slashed ballot access in states like Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Florida. Now, three months after the 2014 Republican wave, another class of state lawmakers are prepping another assault on voting rights under the same guise of “uniformity” and “ballot integrity.”

Georgia’s New Plan To Make Voting Even Harder

Atlanta residents protest voter suppression measures in the lead up to the 2014 election.

A plan to further slash the availability of early voting is rapidly advancing in Georgia.

A committee of state lawmakers voted along party lines last week to slash the state’s early voting days from 21 to 12. The full legislature could call a vote on the cuts at any time, and with Republicans holding a majority of the House seats, the measure would likely pass.

40,000 unprocessed Georgia voter registrations go to court

Georgia's Democratic gubernatorial nominee Jason Carter is in a tight race with incumbent Nathan Deal — one that could easily be decided by fewer than the 40,000 potential voters with missing registrations.

The story starts simply enough: African-Americans and Hispanics across Georgia were registered to vote at levels lower than their white state-mates, so the New Georgia Project was started by the non-profit Third Sector Development to register new voters, concentrating on minority communities. And that is exactly what the New Georgia Project did.
